Pile Cutting & Trimming

F012
Pile cutting and trimming, to expose the reinforcement for incorporation into the pile cap, is a process in the construction sequence that, at best is not given sufficient thought and more commonly is often ignored and treated with no regard. The fact is that it is one of the most important stages in the construction of the foundations as it will dictate whether there is a proper interface between the foundation piles and the superstructure. Improper treatment of piles during the breaking down process can result in serious structural defects to the pile and/or excessive settlements of the superstructure due to a substandard interface between the pile and the foundations.

Piling in Brownfield Sites

F011
Development of Brownfield site is becoming more commonplace due to the increased scarcity of suitable development land. In most cases, these developments require piling and/or deep foundations, due to the unsuitable nature of near surface material to conventional foundation methods (ie: low bearing capacity values or unsuitable for excavation and removal from site).

Vibration Associated with Driven Piling

F010
Vibration associated with Driven Piling is dependent on several factors inlcuding the size of hammer and drop height, the pile size and type (Precast Concrete, Steel Tube, Steel Section, Timber), the Pile load, the Ground conditions, and site layout. Ground vibration is generally measured in three orthogonal directions by means of accelerometers in the vertical, transverse and longitudinal directions. The Peak Particle Velocity is taken as the vector sum of these three direct components. The unit used for the PPV is millimetres per second. It is important at the outset of a piling contract, where there may be a risk due to vibration, that clear guidelines are established between all parties concerned.

Preparing your Site for Piling

F009
Site preparation may vary according to the type of piling to be carried out, the equipment used and the environment. These simple steps will: • Allow for swift commencement of piling operations • Provide a safe environment for the piling crew and co-workers • Identify any and all hazards present on site • Clearly identify the working area. To prepare the site for piling, the main contractor should be advised to control the following elements: • Access to the site • The working platform • The services

Risks Associated with Piling

F008
Having established that a project requires a piled foundation, it is crucial to assess the potential risks involved. While every site has its own particular risks, this quick and simple guide provides an overview for identifying the main considerations to enable control measures to be put in place in order to eliminate (or greatly reduce) identified risks.

Choosing a Pile System

F007

Piling can be categorised into two main divisions:
1. REPLACEMENT piles are generally bored where the soil is excavated and replaced with concrete or grout.
2. DISPLACEMENT piles typically involve driving piles into the ground where the soil is displaced radially and vertically.

Precast Concrete House Foundations

F002

Combining precast concrete piling, precast concrete pile caps and precast concrete ground beams, manufactured under controlled factory conditions.
Advantages include:

  • Improved Health & Safety
  • Greater speed of construction
  • Higher standards of quality and reliability
  • Greater predictability of costs and programme
  • Less disruptions to the construction process (not weather dependent)
  • Reduced environmental impact (no spoil on site or wasted materials)
  • Simpler construction process
  • Reduced reliance on expensive, scarce traditional trades
  • All delivered in one sub-contract package
