news_2009414954_Terradrive_Greener_Piling_SystemsGreen and sustainable energy has lately become a “hot topic” in the construction world, and Terradrive Piling & Foundations Ltd has been determined to play its part.

Currently involved in a project at Curragh Windfarm, in Co Cork, Terradrive will provide the foundations system to support new windmills and their associated sub-station.

Precast concrete driven piling has been selected as the most appropriate foundations solution, based on health & safety, technical and environmental requirements.

“The ground conditions of the site at Curragh are very soft, which is very suitable for precast piling”, explains Managing Director Eddie Horkan. “Moreover, the project is to follow specific environmental policies and very demanding requirements in terms of Health & Safety. With such benefits as minimal waste on site and no digging involved, precast concrete driven piling reduces health & safety hazards and is environmentally friendly.”

Terradrive is also going a step further and launches its “0-Carbon Footprint” system.

The objective of this eco-friendly initiative is to evaluate, control and reduce the carbon emissions created by Terradrive’s piling works. It also allows the company to offer 100% environmentally-friendly foundations solutions, as all accounted emissions produced can be off-set.

It is estimated that the built environment in Ireland accounts for about 40% of carbon dioxide emissions, without including the emissions created during the building process. Early research has also suggested that precast concrete driven piling creates less CO2 emission than other piling system. Using precast piling could therefore reduce CO2 emissions from the start of the building project.
