PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project included driving 16 precast piles, up to 20 metres depth, on the Pier at Berth 51, as foundations for a pre-fabricated office block.

GROUND CONDITIONS

The top 6 metres comprised backfill for Pier walls, followed by the silts and ground conditions normally associated with Dublin Bay.

DESIGN SOLUTION

  • The precast piles were driven into the ground to a depth of between 16 and 20 metres, and for a working load of 600KN per pile.
  • The overall construction programme was completed in 3 days.
  • A key characteristic of this project was the limitation of working space at the end of a pier head.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project consisted in the design and construction of a foundations package for 15 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom houses, all semi-detached, in Fenagh, about 10 minutes-drive from Carlow.

GROUND CONDITIONS

The development was situated near the new Waterford-Carlow by-pass, in the rapidly expanding village of Fenagh and was ideally suited to this type of foundations package.

DESIGN SOLUTION

  • The foundations package included the provision of precast concrete piling (to a depth of up to 6m), precast concrete pile caps, and precast concrete ground beams.
  • The overall construction programme was completed in 3 weeks.
  • Terradrive introduced a new cast-in-situ caps system for this project, which proved to be a great success and a cost effective alternative to a precast caps solution.
